Creative Support is a charity that provides care services for people with learning disabilities, mental health and other needs.  They asked for help to rejuvenate an allotment area for their clients to use and gain valuable skills and this is where teams from Heathrow Airport Ltd and OCS Group – Aviation Division (the airports landscape contractors) stepped in.  Volunteers from the businesses came together last week and undertook some grounds maintenance to get the allotment ready for use by clients.

A representative from Creative support said ‘The work that the team from Heathrow did was incredible, everyone worked really hard and that shows in the final result. The allotment will provide many of the service users a place to practice their gardening skills which many of them won’t have had the opportunity to do so before. The area will also provide a place of tranquillity, a place to sit and admire the plants…and maybe even enjoy some fruit and vegetables that have been planted!’

A team member from Heathrow Airport Ltd said ‘Along with invaluable support from OCS, the team from Heathrow Airport  spent the day transforming the plot from a completely overgrown large piece of land into a usable and attractive allotment, now planted with flowers, vegetables, fruit and fruit trees and building two compost bins to help with future maintenance.  The team thoroughly enjoyed the day, the sense of achievement and contribution to the local community, particularly as some of the users of the service came along in the afternoon to see what we were doing.  It was a great opportunity to bond and work as a team and to see something through to the finish.’

This employee volunteering opportunity was brokered by Slough Business Community Partnership that provides a valuable link between business and the community.  If you are a business and would like to know how you can engage with the local community then please get in touch by phoning: 01753 696958.
